Why Do Eye Tests Matter?

Eye tests are vital to your overall well-being, regardless of age. They are essential for detecting potential issues early on to ensure timely intervention. From 9 days old to 109 years old, comprehensive eye tests can uncover conditions that might otherwise go unnoticed, like glaucoma or macular degeneration. Think of it as a regular check-up for your vision, as important as any other health check.

Take control of your eye health and make eye test appointments part of your routine at Fitzroy North Eye Centre.

How Often Should You Book an Eye Test?

We recommend an annual eye test for any patient who wears glasses or contacts. If you don't normally need vision correction, you still need to have routine comprehensive eye tests. Optometrists often recommend more frequent eye tests for people with diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders, as many diseases may impact vision and eye health.

Since the risk of eye disease increases with age, everyone over the age of 60 should be examined annually.

If you are over 40, it's a good idea to have your eyes examined every one to two years to check for common age-related eye problems such as presbyopia, cataracts and macular degeneration.

Trust Us for Accurate Eye Tests for the Whole Family

Our Comprehensive Vision Assessments go way beyond the standard eye test. Our Optometrists combine sophisticated diagnostic techniques with the most up to date training and knowledge to fully assess how your brain processes visual information and ensures that you and your families eyes are healthy. Our Comprehensive Vision Assessments include:

  • Visual acuity: This measures how clearly you can see.
  • Refraction: An eye exam that measures a person's prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
  • Ocular Motility: This assesses how well your eyes move together.
  • Stereopsis: This measures your depth perception.
  • Visual field: This maps out your peripheral vision (on indication).
  • Convergence insufficiency: This checks for problems with your ability to focus on near objects for sustained periods
  • Accommodative infacility: This checks for problems with your ability to change focus from near to far objects.
  • Visual perceptual skills: This evaluates your ability to process visual information, such as recognising patterns and shapes (on indication).
  • Binocular Vision Assessment: This checks how well your eyes work together as a team and how they change focus and point accurately and comfortably.

In addition to these tests, our Comprehensive Vision Assessment includes a discussion of your visual history and symptoms, along with a physical examination of your eyes. The results will help us identify any vision problems and underlying conditions affecting your vision.

Following the assessment, we will provide you with a personalised plan for your unique needs. We prescribe quality eyewear and solutions tailored to your lifestyle and explain the benefits during this consultation.

Detecting vision problems in children can be challenging, which is why regular eye tests are important for their overall well-being and development. These tests allow us to identify common vision issues early, enabling prompt implementation of effective treatments and corrective measures. Early detection can significantly impact a child's learning abilities, social interactions, and overall quality of life.

  • Good visual information processing means being able to quickly and accurately process and analyse what is being seen, and store it in visual memory for later recall.
  • Intuitive Colorimetry is a diagnostic test used to determine the optimum tint to help alleviate or reduce symptoms of perceptual distortions associated with Visual Stress syndrome.
  • We offer advanced optometric phototherapy, aimed at enhancing visual comfort and performance. By using unique light therapy, we aim to improve visual symptoms caused by visual stress or poor visual function.
